Hana no Asuka Gumi (1987) [v2]

https://nyaa.si/view/1913104
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

I hate this OVA now with an absolute passion, so I'm not gonna talk about too much in here and will just get straight down to the basics.

This release of the OVA utilizes a Domesday LD rip captured by w0wmd. Translation is still the same as with v1 but with a good portion of lines tweaked by Yume—this also uses a new font for the dialogue and added typesetting for the title logo + on-screen character names (thank you TougeWolf & Windii for these).

That's all I can think of at the moment. Maybe there are some other important (or minor) additions to this release but I can't be bothered to think about what they were. At the very least though—this is absolutely a HUGE improvement over the first version of this OVA that I released years ago, so consider using this version instead if you're looking to watch it for the first time ever.

Before anyone asks—yes, I do intend on re-doing the 2nd OVA too at some point but I can't tell you when that will be, unless someone beats me to it first.

Zukkoke Knight - Episode 09 (16mm HD Scan)

https://nyaa.si/view/1895741
Fansub credits can be found in the description above.

Bit of a funny story behind this one. I acquired this episode on 16mm back in March 2023 but didn't actually get it scanned until a full year after this was acquired LMAO

This got translated in July 2024 but I hadn't begun looking at it until the last few weeks of October. It was pretty last minute, but it suddenly hit me that I wanted to post this on Halloween since it was a Dracula-themed episode, and so I made every effort to try and get this edited & TLC'ed so I could post it on time.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it on time for 10/31... but at the very least, this episode is finally finished now, so I'm posting it tonight to get it over with.

That said... this is a film scan of Episode 9 of Zukkoke Knight: Don de la Mancha. This show hadn't received a full release of any sorts until earlier this year when it finally got added onto streaming, but it uses a very bad tape master and some of the episodes are even corrupted...
Ashi Pro still has the masters, but they're unable to get them scanned in HD due to budget issues, so an official HD remaster isn't happening any time soon. For now, this is the closest we'll get to seeing what the show would look like in HD.

Lightning Superhuman Gridman - Episodes 01 ~ 05

https://nyaa.si/view/1890880
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

Marty subbing toku... who would have thought?
(This won't be the last time, but that's another story for another time)

I had heard for a while that the live-action Gridman show has... really bad official English subs. Matter of fact, Gridman was one of those shows that I wanted to check out eventually but the lack of an actual good-quality release resulted in me putting a low priority on checking it out.

It seemed like someone was going to scrub the subs years ago, but only episode 1 was put out and the project got dropped afterwards for some unknown reason I don't know of—despite the subber still being active nowadays...

I randomly got the urge to check out Episode 1 many months ago, and... despite the somewhat dated production values, I really liked it! It's got an interesting premise and I enjoyed the idea of having cyber heroes fight off villains looking to wreck the real world via "digital" means. And so—seeing how nobody else was seemingly going to fix up the subs any time soon...

I decided to do it myself :)

Episodes 01 ~ 03 are the /m/subs release, but with various lines tweaked & re-timed here and there. Episodes 04 & 05 are translated from scratch by Yume—and the rest of the show, going forward, will be TL'ed from the ground up too.

The show is currently translated up to episode 9—more & more episodes will be translated in the following months, but they will still need to be edited by me. The plan after this release was to upload the remaining episodes one by one (and do batch releases later), but maybe I might just do batches of five instead like with today's release. This is subject to change though, it's not final!

That said, enjoy these subs. They're a huge improvement over the official Mill Creek release and really deserve this treatment!

Tongari Boushi no Memole - Episode 04

https://nyaa.si/view/1888794
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

After having won the tug of war against the adults in the previous episode, Memole & friends set out to visit Marielle once again. After their arrival, they learn more about Marielle's (rather strict) caretaker, as well as her pet cat Jojo—they also ask Marielle about what she had meant by that "comment" of hers after her revival, and Marielle proceeds to give them some backstory about her past and what led to her current situation.

Kaitei Daisensou: Ai no 20,000 Miles (1981)

https://nyaa.si/view/1886837
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

This is an English fansub of a 1981 TV special by Tatsunoko Productions, titled Kaitei Daisensou—taking place in a world where the evil Gabia empire (controlled by Emperor Darius) has taken over most of the planet Earth, undersea explorers Ricky and Ben dedicate themselves to searching for ancient underwater civilizations when they are suddenly picked up by the mysterious Captain Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus. Things begin to get tense when Emperor Darius eventually starts chasing after the Nautilus, as he firmly believes he can't be a complete ruler unless he gets rid of Captain Nemo...

Many, many years ago, GANGO translated this into English after I managed to snag a low-quality raw from a (now dead) torrent. A while back, I found out that this got added onto JP streaming services, utilizing a slightly better video source than that of the original JP VHS. And so, perevodildo and I partnered up together to do a touch-up of GANGO's subs while also using better materials.

The video source is taken from Hulu JP—this was on Amazon JP as well but it was split into 3 separate parts for whatever reason... Hulu JP had the entire special as a single video file, so it was more convenient to use that instead. The streaming version uses optical mono audio but we also included a stereo track, taken straight from the VHS release (captured by Japanese Hoarder, and stitched by w0wmd). You want my recommendation? Even though the VHS audio is technically in higher quality, it's mixed really weirdly and I don't like it, so I'd honestly go with the optical mono track here.

Lastly: what did I think of this...?
As that One Piece GIF goes... this shit is so mid 💔

I must admit I've never actually seen this until now, when I began my QC & editing pass of this title. The storyline's interesting, but... Idk how to explain it—it just gets really boring around the mid-way point. It was so mid that I actually neglected to work on this for various months until perevodildo asked me to resume it again earlier this month 💀
I think one of the pet peeves I have with this title is that a lot of characters seemingly just... disappear near the end and the anime never explains what happens to them. What happened to the scientist of the Nautilus? Ricky and Ben seemingly had their own crew before they were also forced to work for Captain Nemo—were they forced to participate in the big battle at the end? Did they all also die? It just seems like Tatsunoko was in a hurry to finish this and consequently didn't properly wrap up the fates of those characters. Was also hoping for a proper showdown between Nemo & Darius but that didn't happen either...

Oh well.

Anyways, enjoy...?

Tongari Boushi no Memole - Episode 03

(UPDATE 3/14/25: This post used to have the Nyaa link to the episode but this was seemingly flagged on 3/3/25 for copyright infringement... I can't dispute it, so I'm removing the link for this post. It can be found on Nyaa under the LonelyChaser & Inka-Subs tag)

Memole visits the "giant girl" again previously seen in Ep. 2. However, upon arrival, the girl is seemingly on the verge of passing away until Memole unknowingly helps bring her back to life. After Memole & friends return to their homes, the village elder prevents them from ever seeing the girl again—that is, until Bagman passes onto Memole a certain secret that can help get her to see the girl once again, and it involves finding a secret snake of sorts somewhere within the village...

Getter Robo Go - Episode 30

https://nyaa.si/view/1858516
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

Randou uses a new weapon in his fight against NISAR—a satellite capable of launching destructive lasers in any location, straight from space around Earth's orbit. The Getter crew are assigned to take it down, with just two catches—only Getter Sho is capable of being able to launch into space without breaking down, and Sho herself has never experienced piloting in outer space... Will this work out for them? (Spoiler alert: it does—this show doesn't end at 50 episodes for no reason after all)

Also, on an unrelated note:
Now that episode 30 is out, I will finally begin preparations for a 2nd batch release of the show. I don't have any estimates for this—maybe it'll come out sooner than expected, maybe not. But as usual I will keep you guys updated.

F2 Grand Prix (1984)

https://nyaa.si/view/1846614
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

Back with another live-action movie sub! Toho's "F2 Grand Prix" from 1984—"the first and last F2 racing movie", as Wikipedia JP likes to put it. This is a drama set in the world of F2 racing, where three racers—Yutaka Imoto (Ken Tanaka), a regular, Keiji Sasaki (Toru Minegishi), a longtime champion, and Satoru Nakano (Kiichi Nakai), a rookie—all compete for the title of champion in the '83 Japan Grand Prix tournament.

Interestingly enough, this movie was made before the F2 racing boom hit Japan—this kind of racing wasn't yet popular in Japan and consequently the movie did not do well as a result. I guess even the author of the original book that this movie was based on wasn't confident about turning this into a movie, as he seemingly went "Are you serious?" when he was approached by Toho and asked about making a live-action adaptation of his work.

I originally discovered the movie when I was going through Kentaro Haneda's movie score list many many years ago—I was under the impression this movie was never re-released again past its initial theatrical release as I couldn't find much info online but I did manage to discover that this had a VHS release, and only that. (On a similar note, I wonder if its performance affected its ability to get released on DVD...)
Unfortunately I couldn't do much about the movie because the VHS was rare as hell. I pretty much forgot about it until years later when an encoder that I frequently work with informed me that a recent HD TV broadcast of the movie was posted onto private torrent sites, and with JP captions at that! The rest is self-explanatory.

As far as video/audio quality goes: Toho clearly got this re-scanned, and it definitely beats having a VHS rip. Sadly there's a lot of film damage here (just color fading, mostly), which I couldn't do anything about. I was told that distributors typically release the raw footage on streaming sites before fixing it up for a home media release but I have no clue if Toho will do that anytime soon with this movie.

The audio is also clearly sourced from VHS—which is fine! The VHS release was in stereo and no doubt would have easily beaten the film's optical track, but there's some clicking here & there and some drop-outs throughout the movie. I can't confirm if it was mastered like that, and the audio being lossy doesn't help. The volume was really quiet, so I raised the volume a little bit. I really didn't want to do that since, again, the audio was lossy, but in the end it won't actually matter anyway (and you'll see why at the end of this post).
Also, I don't know if this was on the VHS release or if this was a consequence of not having captured the audio correctly but the audio slows down like crazy after the end credits—kind of like turning off a turntable as it's still playing and immediately lifting up the needle afterwards. It's jarring.

I'll be honest—don't expect Oscar-level quality from this movie. This isn't to say the movie is bad! It isn't, far from it. But the drama in this movie isn't really mind-blowing stuff or anything. Maybe you'll have more interest in it if you're super obsessed with car racing or something.

Some final notes:
I actually intend on releasing a v2 of this movie, but it won't be any time soon. I lucked out and managed to snag a copy of the movie on VHS—the plan is to get the audio recorded in FLAC, digitally clean it up, and paste it over the movie. I'm also intending to include some other minor bonus goodies with the torrent, and I may possibly get it translated in Spanish too but I can't promise anything about that one.

Anyways, enjoy!

Tongari Boushi no Memole - Episode 01

https://nyaa.si/view/1843295
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

NEW PROJECT RAHHHHHH  🗣🗣🗣

TL;DR—this is another collaboration I'm doing with Inka Subs. We actually happen to have the whole show translated but only the first few have been edited (or are in the process of being edited) so far. The plan is to release these episode-by-episode and compile them into batches later.

The long version:

Memole was one of those anime shows I admittedly didn't know about for a while but I got invested into it the more I began checking it out. The art is by far probably the most beautiful that I've ever seen for an 80s anime show, and it has music by Nozomi Aoki to go along with that... I think I read somewhere that the staff wanted to make this show as if you were reading a storybook of sorts, and they absolutely nailed it with that look & feel.

Naturally, I wanted to see if subs existed online, and unfortunately they didn't. Yume—whose services I've been using for the majority of my projects—told me that this show was a dream project of his and that he had been wanting to work on it for a long time, so after some talking with the folks at Inka, I went and commissioned Yume to get the whole show translated. Overall, the translation took about 5-6 months. The rest is being handled by Inka Subs—typesetting, TLC, etc., but I'm helping out with QC as well.

I think that's about it. I announced the project on Twitter a while back but based off the replies I got, it would seem that a lot of people grew up watching this as kids—albeit, in different languages. I hope these very same people enjoy watching this in its original language with English subs :^)

Please look forward for more episodes!

Yu-Gi-Oh! - The Movie (1999)

https://nyaa.si/view/1832479
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

Another collab with Kineko. This time it's a LD Domesday rip of the 1999 Yu-Gi-Oh! movie by Toei Animation, originally screened at one of their movie festivals or something.

Various rips existed online beforehand but I think they mostly originated from bootlegs, and you can probably already guess what the quality on those were like. The English subs were equally just as bad, so after Kineko transferred their LD copy of it, I stepped in to make new English subs from scratch.

This is now also subbed in Spanish as well, having been translated from the new ENG subs as the main base! English will be the default language here but you can switch to Spanish on the second sub track.

Bonus content includes a trailer, hi-res LD scans, the LD's analog audio track as a separate audio file (de-clicked & de-noised by me), as well as an HD film scan of a rush print containing several minutes of WIP footage of the anime.

Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald (1997)

https://nyaa.si/view/1827012
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

A project that took way longer than it should have...
Nevertheless, I finally present to you Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald, from 1997!

This movie tells the story of the cast & crew of a radio drama's late-night broadcast—the drama itself being an adaptation of a script submitted by a writer for a contest where the winner would have their story turned into a radio drama. After having done a run-through of the drama before it's set to go live, the cast & crew are seemingly ready for the final run.

Until the lead actress of the drama (played by the wonderful Keiko Toda 😍) decides she refuses to participate anymore unless she's given permission to change her name.

With only minutes left before they're scheduled to go live, the producer gives her permission—but then the other cast members decide they want to change their names as well, and even go as far as to have the setting changed and other aspects of their characters as well! Consequently, this begins a comedic chain of events where both the cast & crew improvise the story as the live broadcast goes along, much to the dismay of the original script writer.

I was recommended this movie by a friend back in January 2023—I don't remember how the movie was brought up, but I was looking for new stuff to watch since I had caught COVID at the time and had to isolate in my room.

The movie was FANTASTIC. Literally kept me on edge and there's tons of chuckle-worthy moments as well. The subs? Not so much. The version I watched didn't have very good subs and kind of affected my enjoyment of the movie, somewhat. I later found out that there was a better set of subs out there but even that had its own issues too.

The rest is self-explanatory. This project was started in March that same year, finished with re-translation & re-timing that same month, and...well, the rest is followed by delays & stalling, from my end. I didn't send it out for TLC until May, and I didn't get it QC'ed until July later.

All that was left at that point was for me to give it a final watch so I could make any edits along the way, but it was here when I only began looking at it once in a while and there was a brief period of time where I didn't even check it for months. Ultimately this was finally finished this past week, but if I had put in the effort for it this probably could have been posted in 2023.

That pretty much sums up the history of this project, but I'm not entirely finished with it just yet. Right now I just wanted to focus on getting the movie out ASAP but I intend on releasing a v2 at some point in the future with tons of extras and maybe a Spanish translation of this movie. We'll see.

Enjoy!

Sweet Home (1989) [LD] + Extras

https://nyaa.si/view/1786505
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

Subbed version of a 1989 JP horror film that's currently stuck on VHS/LD, but seemingly later went on to inspire the Resident Evil franchise? Not the movie, I mean the movie's Famicom adataption. When this movie was released on home media, the director sued the production company over royalties with regards to the VHS/LD releases, and over concerns about whether the movie would have been edited without his consent.

The director lost the lawsuit, and since then this has not been re-released by Toho, presumably because it has left a bad taste in their mouth and they don't wish to associate with it anytime soon.

I had known about this movie for a while now but wasn't prioritizing it in my "to-watch" list. It wasn't until I was approached by Kineko Video when I found out that this movie both had shitty English subs (not surprising for fansubbed Asian live-action movies, sadly) and a shitty VHS rip on top of that. I was given the opportunity to fix up the English subs using a Domesday LD cap they did—the rest is self-explanatory :)

The torrent includes the main feature, a teaser of the Capcom game sourced from VHS, LD scans, and the movie OST as extras.

Also: Spanish subs are included within this release as well.

Enjoy!

Tantei Monogatari - Episode 3

https://nyaa.si/view/1780871
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

I've not put out any episodes from this show since Feb. 2023...how embarrassing! Even more so considering this had (sorta) been nearly finished months ago, and probably could have been posted by then if I had put in the effort for it. However I did say I'd work on this at my own pace, so sorry for those who were expecting consistent uploads of these.

I'd like to put out maybe another episode or two this year, but as usual: no promises.

Anyways, in today's episode:
Shunsaku is tasked with wiretapping and following a female lawyer who’s representing a suspect involved in an arson case—the lawyer is digging into a possible insurance fraud scheme because she’s convinced her client is being framed, and it later gets confirmed when Shunsaku gets involved. They both team up to investigate this further while various people attempt to get rid of them through various means...

Also:
I don't usually post these kinds of TL notes on here, but for this specific episode I felt it could benefit from it this time.

Throughout the episode, Shunsaku visits an okama bar while following the aforementioned female lawyer—when he gets confronted by two thugs later, they begin to talk about the bar he visited earlier and one of the thugs refers to one of the workers as a "tranny".

I decided to go with "okama" for whenever Shunsaku refers to the bar's workers since he's clearly friends—if not, more—with them. Furthermore, unlike the thugs, he's not using the word as a slur. Seeing as how the thugs are, well, bad guys, and were clearly threatening the aforementioned bar worker earlier in the episode, I felt that leaving "tranny" in that one line would make sense. Considering the kind of people that are likely watching this show, they may already know this or be able to guess this based off context, but this is just a heads-up regardless!

Rasetsu uses the Jaiganshin as a decoy to lure Getter Robo away from Big NISAR—Baron Yasha, with their newly-developed Metal Beast, uses this opportunity to sneak into NISAR and take control of the energy shield system to lock out Getter Robo & prevent them from re-entering. The Big NISAR crew race against time to prevent Baron Yasha from tracking down the shield generator, as its destruction can also result in the complete obliteration of Big NISAR itself.

(Side note: I feel like this plot was already done before, sometime earlier in the show—but I don't remember...)

The Kabocha Wine - Nita's Love Story (35mm 4k HD Scan)

https://nyaa.si/view/1777576
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

Another collab with Kineko Video—this time it's a 35mm HD scan of a 24-min short film based off the anime "The Kabocha Wine"! This was originally screened at a festival Toei held where they also put up various movies they made, ranging from live-action to anime. For a while, this had only ever gotten a VHS release before getting its first ever DVD release 10-ish years ago or so—it was included in a compilation DVD of other movies from the festival Toei held.

I purchased this on 35mm quite some time ago but finally managed to get this scanned by the folks at Kineko recently. This still doesn't have an official HD release yet so this is as good as it will probably get for a while.

Anyways, for the plot: Nita brings home a puppy which the residents of Sunshine Academy begin to assume is his. Shunsuke, Elle, and the others help raise it, but a delinquent biker boy uses the opportunity to trick Elle into joining him on a yacht he owns. Shunsuke, having realized this, rushes in to save her before it's too late.

Enjoy!

Choriki Robo Galatt - Episode 16

https://nyaa.si/view/1772523
Fansub credits can be found in the link above.

Revived from the dead...again...

Much like Episode 15, this (and Ep. 17) have been finished for uhhh quite a while now. The original plan was for me to finish editing all the remaining episodes so that I could release them weekly afterwards, but that didn't happen, so... 🙃

I'll probably post Ep. 17 next week, I don't have any estimates for when the other episodes will be put out. Hopefully soon enough though. I'm so close to finishing this and I really don't want to push this aside any longer.

Anyways!

In today's episode, Michael and Patty stumble upon a toddler who takes a liking to Patty—in a motherly way of course, much to Michael's dismay. However, what they don't know (yet) is that not only is the child a psychic, but he's also Zcrap's son! Zcrap brings him to Earth with the intention of getting him to use his psychic powers to wreak havoc on the planet, but he irresponsibly loses him after getting drunk one day and scrambles to find him with Camille's "assistance" before his wife finds out and beats the living daylights out of him for it. Average Galatt hilarity ensues afterwards.

Getter Robo Go - Epsiode 24

I wrote this on Twitter already, but the hiatus I planned on taking from this show took longer than I expected—I'm also not satisfied with the fact that I was 6-7 episodes away from the show's next batch and yet I decided to go through with the hiatus anyways. (Technically my fault for juggling so many projects at once, but alas...)

Anyways, I'm making an effort to resume this once more. I don't have any estimates for the remaining episodes but I'm hoping to put these out quick enough for me to get to Episode 30 soon enough, and then the show's 2nd batch after that.

That aside...
In today's episode—a crew member from Big NISAR asks the Getter crew for help in investigating the disappearance of his friend, who was last seen at a museum where other similar incidents have been occurring as well. Things seem fine at first, but not until Gai seemingly disappears himself later...

Anime Sanjuushi (The Three Musketeers Anime) - Episode 16 [16mm HD Scan]

Another Kineko Video collab, this time being a 1080p scan of a 16mm copy of "Anime Sanjuushi"—Episode 16, to be specific. The show already has an HD release but unfortunately it was cropped from 4:3 to 16:9, so this film scan should help demonstrate what an actual 4:3 HD release of the show would look like.

This release uses magnetic audio, taken from the Amazon Prime release and stitched to the episode by "crashoveride953". I don't typically do this, but I've decided to leave in the reel's original optical audio for anybody else who wishes to check it out.

(NOTE: Unfortunately there are two splices around the 9 minute mark of the episode—although they are short, nonetheless the audio skips as a result. The magnetic audio track for this release has also been edited to reflect these splices).

Enjoy!

Devil de Story (1983)

Our first 2024 upload!
A mysterious—and possibly lost—film from 1983...

This popped up for sale back in 2022 with little to no info online—it was listed for an abysmal price but me and some folks from Kineko were able to obtain it securely with our crowdfunding efforts. The TLC'er on this project concluded that this was likely made by a talent agency with the purpose of promoting its actors. Considering this is the only film they showed up in, I don't think it went the way they had hoped...

Anyways—hard to describe what kind of movie this is. Some guy wakes up in the desert with an alien girl and uses some "tickets" he had on him to take various glimpses throughout his life, starting from when he was a child and leading up all the way to his appearance in the desert. He despises being "ordinary" and attempts (unsuccessfully) to be the exact opposite.

I'm not sure what the ending means, so don't ask me about that.

The 16mm film print for this movie was extremely faded—color correction was done on it to try and get it looking as less red as possible. Because there are no images of the movie online, it's really hard to pinpoint how exactly it should look and I'm not too sure if it would have been possible to get the colors to look "original" anyways, given the print's condition and all that.

Enjoy!
