An Update on Getter Robo Go

  

I've probably already tweeted about this at some point but I can't be arsed to backtrack & confirm that—and I'm well aware that I have blog followers that don't follow me on Twitter anyways, so... here's a blog post I wanted to put out regarding the progress on my Getter Robo Go fansubbing project.

TL:DR - No, it's not dead, but don't expect anything for a while.

So with Galatt & the Borgman TV anime both out of the way for now, you'd expect Getter Robo Go to progress as smoothly, right? Regretfully, that is not the case here—the show will still need quite some extensive editing before I can start putting out new episodes again.

Firstly: my timing preferences have changed throughout the years—what I originally considered okay for this show's early episodes have now become an annoyance for me to look at. The worst part is I don't remember either at what point the episodes' timing slowly began to shift into what my preferences are nowadays. Maybe it might have been around Ep. 25 but I'd have to re-watch everything from Ep. 01 to 30 to fully confirm that.

Secondly: this really should have been decided from the project's conception, but the show will now be receiving additional QC assistance. I've previously pointed out on Twitter that there were some glaring typos & errors I missed throughout these episodes, with one of the earlier episodes having a typesetting error that was so huge I was genuinely shocked nobody ever thought to bring it to my attention at all. One user who has frequently assisted me on my projects has agreed to QC this but it won't be a short task given the number of episodes in this anime and the number of other projects this user is also QC'ing.

Third: well, this one isn't a final "point" or anything, but just something I wanted to address. I've stated multiple times before that I want to put out Batch 2 before resuming with more episodes and I am still holding true to that.

"Marty, why don't you just release Batch 2 without the QC implementations?"

Episodes 01 through 14 are already at v2. If I re-released them again now as they are, they would be at v3 for the typesetting & timing changes. They'd have to be re-released as v4 after that to account for the QC'ing. I want the v3's for Ep. 01 ~ 14 to be the final ones as I really don't want to update them again after that, so if I can fit in everything without the need for further revisions then that would naturally be better for me. 

That's really all I got right now. I don't want to half-ass this show and I really want to give it the same level of quality as Galatt & Borgman, so I hope you all understand.

Getter Robo Go - Episode 30

Randou uses a new weapon in his fight against NISAR—a satellite capable of launching destructive lasers in any location, straight from space around Earth's orbit. The Getter crew are assigned to take it down, with just two catches—only Getter Sho is capable of being able to launch into space without breaking down, and Sho herself has never experienced piloting in outer space... Will this work out for them? (Spoiler alert: it does—this show doesn't end at 50 episodes for no reason after all)

Also, on an unrelated note:
Now that episode 30 is out, I will finally begin preparations for a 2nd batch release of the show. I don't have any estimates for this—maybe it'll come out sooner than expected, maybe not. But as usual I will keep you guys updated.

Sho begins to feel lonely after her cousin, Saeko, gets married—Saeko and her husband decide to spend their honeymoon in Okinawa but things go awry when the Baron Yasha brothers decide to attack there with the purpose of building a Metal Beast factory there. With Saeko and the others being held captive, the Getter crew assemble and head there ASAP to stop the brothers & free the hostages.

The Getter team responds to an enemy attack in San Francisco, where they are promptly saved by a mysterious sword-wielding mecha being piloted by Remi Yoshie—the daughter of a professor that Tachibana personally knew many, many years ago.

Yoshie invites both the Getter team & Tachibana to her father's secluded research lab, but something seems off when Yuji discovers that Remi's mecha is made out of a certain material that only Lord Randou has access to...

The Getter crew are asked to conduct a land survey of the reclaimed land belonging to Genkai Bay City, which Gou initially refuses to do...until he finds out the project overseer is a beautiful girl. SIMP!
Anyways, upon arrival, the crew find out that the city is actually nearing total destruction due to the number of earthquakes that had been hitting it beforehand—due to the project overseer's reluctance to do anything about it, Shou takes it upon herself to warn its citizens to evacuate before it's too late.

Meanwhile, a nearby Rasetsu—who had only planned on destroying both the city and its research center—gets caught by surprise seeing Getter Robo there and decides to use the opportunity to try and take down both the city & Getter Robo...

Rasetsu uses the Jaiganshin as a decoy to lure Getter Robo away from Big NISAR—Baron Yasha, with their newly-developed Metal Beast, uses this opportunity to sneak into NISAR and take control of the energy shield system to lock out Getter Robo & prevent them from re-entering. The Big NISAR crew race against time to prevent Baron Yasha from tracking down the shield generator, as its destruction can also result in the complete obliteration of Big NISAR itself.

(Side note: I feel like this plot was already done before, sometime earlier in the show—but I don't remember...)

Gai's younger brother comes over to visit as the whole Getter crew—Tetsu included—plan a short vacation trip to Hawaii. However, Rasetsu sends out a new sea-based Metal Beast that envelops one of Hawaii's islands in a giant cocoon, trapping its residents inside and forcing them to perform slave work for Lord Randou. Having discovered this, the Getter team (much to Gai's dismay, to an extent) leave Tetsu behind on Big NISAR as they set out to investigate the issue and take down the Metal Beast responsible for it.

I wrote this on Twitter already, but the hiatus I planned on taking from this show took longer than I expected—I'm also not satisfied with the fact that I was 6-7 episodes away from the show's next batch and yet I decided to go through with the hiatus anyways. (Technically my fault for juggling so many projects at once, but alas...)

Anyways, I'm making an effort to resume this once more. I don't have any estimates for the remaining episodes but I'm hoping to put these out quick enough for me to get to Episode 30 soon enough, and then the show's 2nd batch after that.

That aside...
In today's episode—a crew member from Big NISAR asks the Getter crew for help in investigating the disappearance of his friend, who was last seen at a museum where other similar incidents have been occurring as well. Things seem fine at first, but not until Gai seemingly disappears himself later...

Professor Tachibana heads out to Germany to enlist a German soldier, Schlöndorff, as the 4th Getter pilot. However, during his flight, Rasetsu seizes this opportunity to take down both Tachibana and Schlöndorff by attacking the German airport where Tachibana is scheduled to land and where Schlöndorff is stationed. The Getter crew head to Germany to battle the Metal Beast sent by Rasetsu, but unfortunately for Sho, she doesn't seem to blend together well with Schlöndorff...

(Gonna be taking a short hiatus from this project so I can focus on finishing some JP movies that I've had in the pipeline for a while now. I hope to resume this in late October. Stay tuned!)

The Silent Dragon, a nuclear submarine belonging to the UN Peace Forces, suddenly declares war on the whole world, with its captain—a former friend of Tachibana's—intending to become the world's next modern Alexander the Great. The Getter crew track him down in order to talk some sense into him, but Randou intends to convince the captain to join his side instead...

Rasetsu devises a new plan to destroy the NISAR HQ by capturing Professor Reiner & his grandson Jack, and later forces Reiner to construct a new laser weapon capable of removing the energy shields that protect NISAR from any incoming missile attacks. Unfortunately for the Getter Robo crew, when they set out to rescue Reiner & Jack, they discover that the two are held hostage inside of Rasetsu's new Metal Beast...

After Randou reveals to his minions that the Getter Robo's weakest form is the marine form, the Baron Yasha brothers attempt to lure out Getter Robo once again by designing a new Metal Beast that ambushes & attacks tankers headed straight for Japan. However, Gou's Getter One gets damaged while fighting and results in a malfunction that introduces a small chance of all Getter pilots exploding during the combination process...

Will they succeed?

Rasetsu, using her powers, summons a Metal Beast back from hell which the Getter Robo team had previously defeated some episodes ago—additionally, she curses Sho at the same time and places her in a very weakened state, all while the revived Metal Beast prepares to attack Big NISAR.

Despite her condition, Sho heads out anyways in her Getter Two alongside Gou & Gai to fight against this new enemy—meanwhile, she sees a certain someone in a vision of sorts whom she hasn't seen in quite a while...

Getter Robo Go - Episode 18

The Baron Yasha brothers devise a new plan to lure Getter Robo into a small mine with the purpose of challenging them to another fight. The problem? Getter Robo Go is unable to use its weapons due to the risk of destroying the mine and possibly burying themselves if they do so.

All hope seems lost...until Gou remembers some pro-wrestling techniques that were introduced to him by Dr. Pochi's nephew, who visited Big NISAR earlier. Perhaps he can put them into use here?

After Randou claims to have found a weakness in Getter Robo, he commands Baron Yasha & Rasetsu to team up (yet again...) to construct a new Metal Beast with the intention of taking down Getter Robo. Meanwhile at NISAR, Gai seems to be troubled by something, so much so that he conflicts with Gou more than usual and it even effects their ability to be able to properly transform their mechas later. I wonder what it is?

After a volcanic eruption off the coast of Malaysia, Dr. Pochi & Tama are dispatched to check it out underwater when a new mineral resembling the G-Minerals is discovered there. However, Randou's servants intercept these plans and send in a new Metal Beast to prevent the doctors from collecting the minerals—the Getter Robo team steps in to prevent any harm to the doctors.

NOTE: Starting this episode, I will now be referring to the G-Minerals as "G-Crystals" from now on. I'll be sure to fix this in the previous episodes once the show is ready for another batch release in the future.

I wasn't planning on resuming Getter Robo Go this soon—not until after I put out my next batch for Sonic Soldier Borgman that I had been talking about elsewhere for a while now...but it seems I still need more time for that. So I've made a change of plans and have decided to put out more episodes of this show in the meantime.

As of me writing this out, this anime has been translated up to Episode 20 so far and will sooner or later go up to 25 (heck, possibly 30 even), so who knows? Maybe it won't be too long before I put out another batch for this show. In any case I have something to keep myself afloat with for a while.

Anyways, with that being said—in today's episode, Yuji receives an SOS call from a camp in Canada, and proceeds to head out by himself in an effort to save the camp's kids as soon as possible. He is joined by the Getter crew, but unbeknownst to them, another Metal Beast lurks near their way...

Getter Robo Go - Batch 1 (Episodes 1 ~ 14)

Here's the first batch for my ongoing fansub of Getter Robo Go—this contains new revisions of Episodes 1 through 14.

I wasn't planning to re-visit the previous episodes (and by "re-visit" I mean re-watch) but I have ultimately decided on doing so to make some timing edits and other minor changes as I see fit. 

Alongside the minor changes, there were lots of major fixes that the previous episodes admittedly did need, so here's a detailed list of what's changed (that I can remember):

1. First few episodes addressed the MC's name as "Go", this has now been switched to "Gou". Same with "Rando" and "Randou".

2. There was an inconsistency in proper capitalization (throughout the episodes) of Getter Robo Go's weapons, this has now been fixed.

3. Embarassingly enough, Episode 6 was written as "Episode 5" in the subs—this is fixed now.

4. "Professor Tachibana" has been switched to "Doctor Tachibana". (If I learned anything from subbing Galatt...)

5. Inconsistency between Randou being referred to as "Lord Randou" and "Master Randou"—going forward, I will be sticking with "Master"

6. Episode 8's name has been changed in Ep. 7's next episode preview

7. The episodes have varying translations of the OP/ED—I've switched them all to have them use the lyrics I've been using throughout the past few episodes. This also includes instances of the OP being used as an insert song in several episodes.

8. This was only for one episode I think, but Battle Helicopter was referred to as "Battle Heli"—this has now been fixed

9. Episode 12 has this scene where Gou and Gai communicate with Sho as she attempts to climb back onto her own Getter ship—I mistakenly italicized some of Gou's & Gai's lines when they weren't supposed to be, but this has now been fixed

10. Not sure how I missed this, but Episode 7's name had weird timing and came in MUCH earlier than it should have. This is fixed now.

11. I made a subtle mention of this in Episode 13's release post, but going forward I am removing all instances of Doctor Pochi & Tama going "woof/nyaa" at the end of their sentences. Quite frankly I was getting really annoyed of having to make certain edits to their sentences in every episode, hence the reason for this change. Don't worry, this doesn't change the meaning of their dialogue.

On a related note: there are instances where both their dialogues literally just consist of only one word, it being either "Woof" or "Meow"—for those kinds of sentences I will be leaving them intact.

Also, for Dr. Tama—there was an inconsistency between him saying "Nyaa" and "Nyan" throughout the episodes, and I couldn't be arsed to figure out which one to use, so I've just simply changed it to "Meow" instead.

12. Fixed inconsistencies with Sho's & Mei's names (written as "Shou" and "May" respectively in some episodes)

13. Bit similar to #9, but I un-italicized certain dialogue lines of the Battle Helicopter pilots throughout some of the episodes. Previously I had italicized them because I thought they were communicating with their radios, but I guess whatever they say also comes out of some speaker outside of their helicopters? Bit of a similar situation whenever Gou speaks from his Getter Robo, and this wasn't something I paid attention to or even noticed until fairly recently.

With the release of this batch, I'll continue working on the show now. No estimates for Ep. 15 yet but it shouldn't be too long.

(P.S. A thank you to Windii for helping TLC and fix what was possibly an error on one line in the JP subs for Ep 2!)

Getter Robo Go - Episode 14

Randou's henchmen send out a new enemy to infiltrate Big NISAR, this time one that's capable of cloning anyone it wishes. It takes on the identity of a newly-stationed mechanic for Getter Robo—Gou and friends are able to take it down, but they are seemingly too late, as the clone has already planted a bomb inside one of the Getter Machines. And just as the Getter crew find out, another Metal Beast immediately appears to attack HQ...oh, the suspense!!

On a slightly-related note:
You may have read elsewhere that I intended to release the show's first batch after the release of Episode 14. TL;DR — expect the batch to go up in January if I'm not able to make the December release for whatever reason.
I've actually already went and fixed all the changes needed for the 1st batch, but I will have to re-watch the episodes again to check for any timing changes I may want to make, amongst other things. Since I'm currently going over the early Galatt episodes again (for that show's 2nd batch), it may take a while before I eventually start with the Getter Robo Go episode re-watches.

Getter Robo Go - Episode 13

The final episode (out of three) that introduces the new mecha variations of Getter Robo—Gai's mecha is finally introduced in this episode.

The enemies send out a new Metal Beast that can dig its way underground, and as such uses its abilities to infiltrate Big NISAR in an attempt to take it down—luckily, Gai's mecha is specifically designed for underground & underwater combat, and is tasked with fighting the Metal Beast. However, due to his past failure from having piloted Getter Robo Go, he's unsure whether he can pull it off or not...

FYI: Starting this episode, I've officially decided to remove all instances of "meow" and "woof" from the two tiny NISAR professors in the show whose names elude me right now. I'll go into detail on this later when I eventually release the show's first batch in the near future.
