V-Jump Festival '95 Video - Slime's Adventures (1995)

Sometime in 2022, the folks at Kineko Video got ahold of various V-Jump Festival Video VHS tapes—I don't know too much about them other than that these were showcases of then-upcoming video games that were being displayed at a festival hosted by Shueisha. Most of these tapes featured a small animation short at the end, titled "Slime's Adventures"—centered around Dragon Quest and based off a similarly-named manga that chronicles the misadventures of a slime named Slikichi as he & his friends get themselves into all sorts of trouble.

It being Dragon Quest-themed already caught my interest, but an anime short starring the slime? Absolute kino, you can't convince me otherwise.

Anyways, in this short, Slikichi is approached by a group of men who offer him free dinner in exchange for a rare hat he owns. Slikichi's friends, having realized the huge mistake he committed, head off to a nearby casino where the hat is being sold for an abhorrent amount of money. They get real close to winning it, until they participate in the final game and lose... only to realize that the player they were competing against was cheating in the first place. And thus, they set out to his hideout to settle things once and for all, and to rightfully claim back the hat too.

Kineko passed off an encode of the short to me back in Dec. 2022, but I must confess that I've been really slow with the progress of this translation 🗿—I didn't get this translated until around August/Sept. 2023, and it wasn't until a few months ago when I finally decided to start looking at it and get this TLC'ed/QC'ed  😅

In any case, it's finally finished now! I'm aiming to translate whatever other of these shorts exist in the other V-Jump tapes, though as usual I can't say when I'll get to them.

Almost two years since the show's most recent batch was released... sasuga

Anyways, a lot has changed for this show's project since then. I've made considerable progress on getting this subbed in Spanish but I also realized at the same time that I made the mistake of releasing the sub files for them online without providing the fonts for them. So, at this point, I'm not releasing any more Spanish episodes publicly and will probably wait until the full show is done—that way I can just easily combine both the ENG & SPA subs together.

Additionally, when I was attempting to resume this show back in Dec. 2024, I had to go back through all of the currently-released episodes again and make a bunch of changes with regards to in-universe terminologies and all of that...

I finished doing whatever fixes needed to be made, but holy hell was it exhausting. 

Final notes:

• The rest of the episodes that will be released from this point on will be utilizing new typesetting—basically the same font I'm using for the majority of my current releases right now. All of the previous episodes have had their typesetting changed too so that it's all consistent with each other but I'm not re-releasing those until the show's final batch release.
• When I was releasing these episodes frequently years ago, I was aiming for a release every Friday—I don't think this will disappoint anybody but I'm opting to ditch that for now. The current plan is to release one episode per month (or two, depending on my mood) whenever I can. The show is practically three episodes away from being fully finished anyways, so you can expect the whole show to actually be done this year for sure.

Normally I'd end this with a small episode plot summary, but...
The same thing that happened with my Memole plot summaries happened with Borgman as well 💀—I had all the summaries written up in a text file that somehow got misplaced. So don't expect any small summary write-ups for the next few episode releases, at least not until episode 32 or so.

Bokura Mangaka: Tokiwa-sou Monogatari (1981)

Another collaboration with perevodildo, released under the "LonelyDildo" tag—this is "Bokura Mangaka: Tokiwa-sou Monogatari", a Toei Animation TV special from 1981.

 

Tokiwa-sou was the name of an apartment building in Japan which was famous for housing many influential manga artists, some of which include Osamu Tezuka, Fujiko Fujio, and Fujio Akatsuka, among many others. The animated TV special—which, interestingly enough, was broadcasted one year before the building was demolished—centers around the lives of the manga artists living in Tokiwa-sou, though most of the special focuses on Fujio Akatsuka as he slowly begins to doubt his skills as a manga artist and questions what type of manga he should truly be drawing.

 

Funny enough, this project dates back to 2022... but it is entirely my fault and the result of stalling. edo999 was in possession of an official Shotaro Ishinomori DVD that contained this TV special, and sent the DVD ISO over to me. I later sent that ISO over to this project's encoder, and the TV special was... pretty much just kept dormant in my SSD throughout the next years, with me telling myself that I'd eventually get to it "soon".

 

Several months ago, perevodildo expressed interest in translating this, to which I had asked if he was interested in collab'ing on this since it was on my radar too. He agreed, and the project pretty much finally kickstarted from there—Yume timed & translated it, perevodildo helped TLC, imatu and I QC'ed this, and an anonymous user offered to help QC this to help identify & fill in references to various manga & anime that none of us on the project's team knew—said user also helped TLC this and fixed some lines here & there.

 

I think that's pretty much it. Despite this anime special featuring various prominent authors, there's only a few handful I really recognized in here. The others—either I vaguely knew them somewhat or didn't know them at all... and TBH I have no interest in checking them out either 😅

Mamoru Nagano in 3159 — MAKING OF THE BABY SITTER (1991)

Whew... this one is a doozy.

Okay, so lemme get this out of the way first:
This is another collaboration with Kineko Video—an English-subbed version of a rare VHS-only documentary starring Mamoru Nagano. It's supposed to go into detail behind the production of an image album he made himself based off his Five Star Stories manga, released by Nippon Columbia in September 1990.

The thing about that, though... the documentary doesn't really cover the actual tracks themselves and is mostly just Nagano talking about the instruments he uses (some of them being custom-made), how he acquired them, etc. This documentary has a book version (now out of print) and even Nagano himself admits that you should check that out if you want extra details behind the production history, some of which includes background on the sound recording. Bummer, but at least he was honest about it! 

Second half of the VHS centers on him visiting Hong Kong for some kind of anime/comics convention—he answers some interview questions here, which I think is a little neat treat for fans of Nagano looking to grab more information about him.

 

 

This project had been in the works since 2023. It started with a user named Dominic Kopp who had approached me via Twitter DMs, letting me know that he had this on VHS and was looking to get it captured. I re-directed him towards the folks at Kineko since I don't have any fancy VHS capturing gear myself. I sent this over to a translator after Kineko finished encoding it—naturally, it needed a TLC pass.

 

However, a JP user took a look at the subs and noticed that the first few lines were already incorrect. Nothing to do with the translator's skills, BTW... he's trustworthy. But he admitted this VHS was a hard one for him to work with due to the accents and all that. As far as TLC passes go on my projects, I don't get the whole thing checked—only marked lines that the translator had trouble with. But in the case of this project, everything needed to be checked, literally. The JP user who looked at the subs in the first place offered to do it but ultimately he got really busy and wasn't able to get to it anymore. 

 

There wasn't anybody else I knew in any fansubbing circles who could tackle this (or who was willing to, anyways), and even after asking for help on Twitter, I got no reply...
 

Unfortunately, the only option I had left was to place this on indefinite hiatus.

 

That changed several months ago when MercuryFalcon introduced me to another Japanese user who's fluent in English and accepting translation commissions at the same time—OverworkedSalaryman. I sent the subs down his way and to my surprise he was actually able to successfully TLC the whole thing with no issues whatsoever!! The thought of having to put this on hiatus actually stressed me out a little bit so I'm glad I was finally able to put this project to rest.

 

Final note:

I'm intending on putting out a v2 of this, eventually. The capture does have a noticeable increase in visible quality compared to what was available on YT previously but the downside is that it has lots of ringing—some tests were done and the ringing can be reduced after all, but it has to be done on the raw capture and due to various IRL circumstances it's not something that can be looked at any time soon. Frankly, I don't know when it'll happen, so I can't give estimates... but I'm not in a rush for it.

Godzilla (1984)

Godzilla 1984 had been on my watchlist for a while now—much like most other things on there, I've never really got to it that quickly due to the number of vinyl & fansub projects I keep involving myself in. Such is the life, I guess...!

Last year I finally brought it upon myself to sit down and get to this movie for once.
The verdict? I thought it was okay. Certainly better than the OG though, that one's a borefest.

However...
The subs I used for watching were from the official US BD that was released in 2016, now out of print. The subs didn't appear to look bad to me at first, but I wasn't a fan of how the lines were typeset and timed. I contacted Yume again for his assistance on re-timing the whole thing, but during the process he had found that there were actually various lines that were mistranslated or just not subbed at all. To make matters worse, the folks over at Criterion—who, at the time of me writing this, have the movie licensed but only available on their streaming service—re-used these very same BD subs for their release of the movie, too!

I figured at this point that I might as well just get the subs fixed in their entirety while I was at it.

Here's what you can expect to see in this release:

• Re-translation & re-timing
  

Don't get the wrong idea—the whole movie isn't re-subbed from scratch! There are lots of lines from the US BD that were kept intact, but likewise, lines that were missed, mistranslated, or looking funky in general have been fixed by Yume. According to his notes, easy lines weren't a problem for the OG translator but they seemed to have struggled a bit during wordy dialogue. Some Russian lines were also left out, but thankfully Yume managed to get those subbed too.

The JP BD had JP captions included, so these were used for reference by Yume throughout this movie.

Also, lots of lines in the subs were re-timed and/or re-worded in order to try & make them stay on-screen for a little longer, as I felt that they were too short length-wise. This also includes combining two lines into one for various bits of dialogue throughout the movie. Yume & I made the decision to have the non-JP dialogue in this movie timed to their speech as opposed to being timed to the subs on-screen since the original on-screen timing of those lines aren't the best.

• "Takero Morimoto" & "Ground Self-Defense Force"

The name of a JP news broadcaster whose name shows up on-screen around the 25 min mark of the movie—due to the way his name was inserted into the subs alongside the dialogue, it resulted in the whole thing looking like a three-liner on-screen. Takero's name isn't mentioned again in the movie after this, so I deleted it since I don't deem it important enough to warrant staying on-screen.

Likewise, this is a similar situation for "Ground Self-Defense Force"—written on the JP army's tanks/helicopters, this line was repeated several times throughout the movie whenever these would show up on-screen. I deleted these too since I don't think keeping them is a must.

• On-screen text timing & adjustments

Some newspaper headlines show up halfway in the movie—these have been typeset thanks to Windii! Some other specific on-screen texts in the movie, as well as the title logo, have been typeset by me too.

 

• Subbed ED credits theme

Self-explanatory. It was previously unsubbed, probably because it's sung in English. My motto is to generally sub everything—even if it's already in English—so that hard-of-hearing people don't feel left out.

• Spanish subs

Thanks to sergiocampa & Kitsukishi, Spanish subs are included with this release! These might be the first ever Spanish subs, but don't take my word for it. I admittedly haven't searched it up all that much, so I could be wrong.

• Lossless 2.0ch Stereo LaserDisc audio

I painfully stitched the LD stereo audio to this release. The 5.1ch track was left out, which I'll explain later.

I had actually gone and bought both the JP LD & BD releases of the movie—the LD for its digital lossless 2.0 stereo mix, and the BD for some extras. I was concerned that I had sorta bought the LD for nothing since the JP BD happened to contain the 2.0 mix as well, but I did a comparison of the two and I can happily say that the LD was not bought in vain: despite the BD having the 2.0 mix, it seemingly lost quality throughout the years and has more distortion in several spots than in the LD version.

When this project's re-timing was begun, the lines were originally re-timed to the US BD's 5.1ch track—the LD 2.0ch audio wasn't stitched in by me until much later. When I had begun my final watch of the movie, I had realized that the 5.1ch track actually moves around lots of dialogue and placed them forwards or backwards by a few seconds. Ultimately this meant that I would have had to create various sets of subs—one for the 2.0ch audio, and one for the 5.1ch audio.

In the end, I just stuck with removing the 5.1ch audio and re-timing some lines to the 2.0ch audio instead. I don't know if it's because I didn't use the right equipment when listening to it but the sound quality of the 5.1ch audio wasn't very good anyways—dialogue on it doesn't sound as clear as the 2.0ch track and some silent sections got awkwardly muted out with a video editor in a way that makes it extremely noticeable. It's very jarring. I don't know if the JP BD's 5.1ch audio is better, but I have no experience with stitching those to movies, so I didn't bother with it.

The US BD had the English dub included but I removed it for this release. It's a fucking travesty to listen to and nobody should be subjected to it.

That should be everything. Here are some final notes:

-Despite me having bought the JP BD of this movie, I used the US BD as the main video source. Maybe my eyes are deceiving me but I swear it looked like the JP BD had a green tint to it... the US BD didn't have it, so I stuck with that.

-Realistically speaking, I probably won't be able to get to this for a while, but I'd like to put out a v2 release of this movie someday. The JP BD has various extras I want to get subbed, and I actually also want to go & stitch in the audio from the movie's drama-hen LP release...but all of that takes time and I am just simply too busy with other projects at the moment.

-Criterion announced a physical release of Godzilla vs. Biollante back during 2024's final months, set for release this year. Toho is also set to release Godzilla 1984 in 4K for the first time this year as well. Naturally, people are suspecting that Criterion will announce a physical release for this movie once the 4K is out... I too suspect this will happen. Criterion's Biollante release is only using 5.1ch audio (no 2.0ch stereo), so there's a possibility that their Godzilla 1984 release might go down that same route, too. Even if they end up putting it out with a completely new translation, I'm still proud of the typesetting done for this release and I'm absolutely certain their release won't have neither that nor the Spanish subs. Having said that, I will not be removing my release of the movie even if they go through with announcing their own version, unless it actually turns out to be an improvement over mine sub & translation-wise.

Tantei Monogatari - Episode 4

Another full year without Tantei Monogatari episodes...  💀

On a positive note, two users have volunteered to help time & translate/TLC the remaining episodes for me. I hope I can progress with this show a little bit faster than how it's going right now, but I'll say the same thing as I said in the blog post for the previous episode... I can't promise anything.

Anyways, quick synopsis for this episode—Shunsaku Kudo finds himself on a ferry boat ride with no recollection of the day before, and it's not long before he finds out that one of his friends (who was on the boat ride with him) gets mysteriously murdered. To make matters worse, upon discovery of his dead body, Kudo also finds a huge stash of stolen cash & gets blamed for both his friend's death & the cash! As it turns out, the cash belongs to a mysterious group called "The Organization" (probably the show's stand-in for the Yakuza or something), and they give Kudo 24 hours to figure out who stole the cash in the first place, or else his life will be at risk...

Some final notes:
This project was previously using the show's BD release as the main source for the raws—they're DNR'ed, though I don't think they look abysmal or anything. However it turns out Toei put up non-DNR'ed versions of the episodes on JP streaming sites, and after a thorough comparison of the BD & Amazon JP raws, it has been decided that this project will use the Amazon JP raws for the remainder of the show.

I've also went ahead and changed the typesetting for this project too. When I put out the 1st batch release for this show, I'll be sure to change the typesetting on Episodes 01 ~ 03 so that they match the typesetting of Ep. 4 and onwards.
